This project we built for a Bellbrook, OH, homeowner certainly falls into the “unique” category. Which basically means there is no category for this structure, because it’s an original creation. While we can’t take credit for dreaming up the concept, we can take all the credit for collaborating with the homeowner to make it real. We can also take full credit for the craftsmanship and attention to detail that make this simple structure even more pleasing.

Open porch, pavilion, tea house?

As your premier Bellbrook, OH, porch designer, Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio couldn’t wait to get started on this sweet little project. It’s not quite like anything we’ve ever designed or built before. It’s definitely smaller than a pavilion. You could say it’s similar to a gazebo, but it’s rectangular rather than the octagonal or hexagonal shape of a traditional gazebo. Like a gazebo, it gives the homeowner a shade structure in the back yard and provides shelter from rain showers. You could liken it to a porch, but it’s freestanding, not attached to the home. Whatever they call it, we can picture one or two people enjoying this space, relaxing amidst the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

The homeowner calls this inviting little getaway spot her tea house, a name that seems to fall somewhere between quaint and exotic. Whimsical, charming? Maybe! No matter the name, it’s both decorative and functional, wouldn’t you agree?

How would you design your freestanding backyard getaway?

For the tea house—or detached porch—design, the client selected pressure-treated wood as the building material. The structure is almost square at 8 × 10 ft. While building code doesn’t require railings on a structure this low to the ground, a charming aesthetic always calls for railings. Pickets, too, of course!

We designed the tea house with a roof as sturdy as one on any typical porch or pavilion. The gable roof design calls up memories of the roof over a wishing well. There’s a big difference, though, because this building has room for furniture inside—at least a tea table and a pair of chairs.

The client is elated with the finished project! So elated, in fact, she left us this glowing review on Google:

I’m extremely happy with my new structure. It’s a great enhancement to my back yard. The 2 men who built it were very diligent and professional. They worked every single day the weather allowed. The workmanship is excellent!

When the weather warms up this spring, she plans to landscape around the new structure and paint it to match her shed. We may just have to come by for a visit to see how it turns out!
